July to September 2024 engagement recap

What do the Bowen Basin, Bell Bay, Pilbara, Latrobe Valley, Northern Territory, Ohio, Maslin Beach, Stradbroke Island, Brisbane and Geraldton have in common?

There's just some of the places CRC TiME and project teams engaged to research, share and learn between July and September 2024.

Find out more below.

Working on the ground

  • Natural Capital Accounting: Together with CSIRO, we released an Australian-first resources suite to support adoption of Natural Capital Accounting in the mining industry. It included case studies at BHP’s Olympic Dam, South Australia and Hanson, BHP and Alcoa sites in south west Western Australia. The launch included an NCA Symposium in Perth.
  • Bowen Basin, Queensland & Bell Bay, Tasmania: Pilots are underway to test a new tool to help forecast regional employment effects of diversification. (Project 1.8). It will include different sectors and council areas.
  • Maslin Beach, South Australia: Partner Hanson held a site tour for SA Government, BHP, universities and the Society for Ecological Restoration to view and learn about the climate-adapted seed sourcing trial it is hosting (pictured below).
  • Latrobe Valley, Victoria: The second phase of a collaborative planning process for mine land kicked off. So far there has been an official launch at the Morwell Innovation Centre, a coal mine site visit by Traditional Owners as part of the Aboriginal deliberation process and a call for Community Panel representatives (Project 1.7).
  • Pilbara, Western Australia: Our booth at the Developing Northern Australia Conference in Karratha led to rich discussions about post-mine transformations.
  • South west Western Australia: CEO Guy Boggs joined the Alcoa Partners tour in July. CRC TiME works with Alcoa on various projects examining different critical issues, such as climate-adapted seed sourcing strategies and seed scaling for land restoration.

Working with First Nations people and organisations

  • NAIDOC Week: We celebrated NAIDOC Week with guests at our Perth office.
  • Restoring Country: The pilot series continued, with all four webinars available for reviewing online. A report outlining key themes identified through the webinars and a workshop is being prepared.
  • Geraldton workshop: More than 12 local Aboriginal people participated in Geraldton research workshop, co-hosted with CSIRO. It helped to identify areas where research could help Aboriginal organisations and communities achieve their goals.
  • First Nations VET Pathways: The Project Steering Committee held an in-person workshop in Brisbane.
  • Yarning Circles: Our Annual Forum provided time and space for attendees to tell us what we are doing well and how we can better support First Nations Inclusion across our portfolio (pictured below).
  • AEMEE 2024 Conference: Preparation began for a strong presence to learn, listen and share at the premier event for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mining, energy and METS enterprises. Look out for an update soon.
  • Curtin First Nation Ranger Program: We helped Curtin seek EOIs for its inaugural micro-credential program.
  • First Nations Advisory Team: The third meeting for 2024 was held in September.

Strengthening global connections for local benefit

  • Global Coal Transitions Conference: Research Director Tom Measham, Project Leader Dr Jess Reeves and CRC TiME HDR scholarship recipient Dr Fitsum Weldegiorgis joined peers working in coal transitions around the world in Ohio. CRC TiME will co-host an Australian workshop next year.
  • ICMM: Our CEO travelled the UK for the Responsible Leaders Forum, adding to our work to support ICMM and Synergy to develop a guide on multi-stakeholder models for asset transitions.
  • International Association for Society and Natural Resources (IASNR) Conference: Co-chaired by Research Director Tom Measham, the conference featured experts from around the world.

Enabling change together
