Recognising excellence: Our 2024 CRC TiME Award winners

Join us in celebrating the contributions of people, projects and knowledge helping to transform what happens when mining ends for the better.

Congratulations to winners of the CRC TiME Annual Awards.

We received 15 nominations highlighting a range of exceptional contributions, making it a difficult task for our judging panel.

 

A New Way Forward (joint winners)

This award recognises innovation, leadership and impact towards charting a new course for post-mine transformations. It could include new ways of working, new partners, improved outcomes or other impacts.

Mass Open Online Course on Mine Closure and Sustainable Transitions

Project leaders:

  • Dr George Barakos, Curtin University
  • Rosemarie Tapia Riveria, The University of Queensland
  • Dr Elaine Wrightman (past project leader).

The project met a need for accessible, comprehensive and affordable education about mine closure and post-mine transformations suitable for different learners.

More than 400 people from 33 countries enrolled in the pilot course.

 

 

 

 

A systematic approach to Regional Cumulative Effects Assessment and Management (Stage 1)

Stage 1 project leaders:

  • Dr Jenny Pope, Murdoch University
  • Dr Renee Young, Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute.

This stage of the project brought together 20 partners to help develop new ways of understanding, assessing and managing cumulative social, economic, environmental and cultural effects. It delivered case studies from across Australia and Canada, a typology for RCEAM and critical findings to improve outcomes.

 

 

Community Champion

Ruth Fitzclarence from the MLRA, accepting the award on their behalf.

This award recognises individuals or organisations whose leadership is helping to transform a community or region in transition.

They host a podcast, have produced the films ‘Life after Smoke’ and ‘Ashes to Aftermath’ to ensure community experiences and voices are captured and heard and, earlier this year, led the ‘10 Years On Community Day’ to mark a decade since the Hazelwood Mine Fire.

This year’s winners are advocates, champions and a source of incredible strength to the Latrobe Valley community. In selecting Josie and Stephanie, the judging panel noted their deep commitment, inclusive and engaging approach and focus on building a positive future for the region.

This award recognises excellence in peer-reviewed research.

‘Community Legal Rights in Mine Closure and Planning: A comprehensive analysis of three Australian states.’

    Laura Hamblin, formerly UWA.

 

Research Communication

This award recognises excellence in communicating and facilitating the use of research.

  • Dr Vilim Filipovic, The University of Queensland

Vilim used a variety of channels – national and global conference presentations, webinars, keynote addresses and social media – to translate complex information about soil hydrology for different audiences.

The judging panel noted Vilim’s efforts to engage and reach broad audiences.
