First Nations Inclusion: Tools, frameworks and resources in development

We're working to develop a range of resources to support First Nations communities and organisations to achieve their cultural, social, economic and environmental priorities.

This work aims to deliver resources, tools and frameworks that:

  • contribute to, inform and support First Nations communities and organisations developing and implementing their own cultural, social, economic and environmental strategies and plans.
  • help industry, government and other sectors to improve how they work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations on post-mine transformations.

Enabling partnerships

  • Enablers of First Nations involvement in mine closure and post-mine transitions (5.6)
  • Engagement processes to support decisions about mine pit lakes (4.9)
  • Capturing different First Nations aspirations for pit lakes (4.9)
  • Community handbooks on the mining lifecycle (5.6)
  • Developing a suite of VET products to support First Nations leadership, involvement and opportunity in mine closure and transitions (5.6)
  • Restoring Country pilot series, including four webinars sharing diverse Indigenous perspectives on mine rehabilitation and closure.

Regional collaboration

  • Indigenous Community Reference Panel deliberation as part of the Collaborative planning in the Latrobe Valley project (1.7)
  • Seeking Aboriginal organisation input as part of development of a regional economic transition framework and analytical tool to help support strategic and scenario planning (1.8)

Bringing knowledge together

  • Lessons from Canadian Indigenous people and First Nations on Indigenous-led Regional Cumulative Effects and Management processes (4.7)
  • Principles for integration of Western Science and Indigenous Knowledge (4.7)
  • Review of barriers and opportunities for Indigenous-led RCEAM (4.7)

Supporting the Indigenous business sector

  • Recognising Indigenous mine closure equipment, technology and services enterprises and growing the sector
  • Identification of opportunities for Traditional Owners with algae-based technologies (3.15)

Working with partners to support First Nations Inclusion in events and activities

  • Ensuring First Nations Inclusion is a priority across our own event program, including our Annual Forums.
  • Working with the AusIMM Life of Mine Conference 2023 to incorporate First Nations perspectives.
  • Working with IMARC, ACG Mine Closure Conference and International Association for Natural Resources and Society to help identify and connect Indigenous leaders to share their experiences, leadership and aspirations for mine closure and post-mine transitions.
  • Collaborating with CSIRO on a pilot research identification workshop in Geraldton (2024).
  • Working with the World Mine Congress on a First Nations perspectives panel as part of the Special Symposium on Mine Closure and Post-Mine Transitions (2023).
