Summary
There is a significant knowledge gap on mine closure and post-mine transitions between the mining industry, governments, and First Nations communities. This affects the ability of all parties to collaborate effectively, hindering negotiations and shared planning. The absence of a vocational education and training pathway contributes to this gap. Core skills and knowledge necessary for mine closure extend beyond restoration activities, encompassing governance, operations, and social and economic dimensions.
This project aims to establish the foundations for developing the training pathway for First Nations peoples and communities and to have this training pathway included in the development priorities in the national plan for the development of training packages and products for the mining sector.
