The theme for our 2023 Annual Report – in line with our 2023 Annual Forum – is ‘Bridging diverse interests’. It reflects one of the challenges we were established to tackle: bringing together different communities, groups, regions, organisations, sectors and ways of working to help reimagine and transform post-mining transitions for the better.

In the report you’ll note the large strides taken across the breadth of research projects and depth of connections and relationships fostered in the 2022-23 period, encompassing rigorous, trusted research and authentic, mutually beneficial relationships with partner organisations.

You’ll see many featured projects and activities that qualitatively showcase the nature of our work across all portfolios. From leading a special symposium at the 2023 World Mining Congress to convening a pilot regional knowledge exchange in the Bowen Basin, we’ve made significant progress in bringing mine closure and transition specialists from industry, government and community to learn from each other and share experiences across the country and the world.

We’ve also included a summary of actions as we strive to improve First Nations Inclusion. Highlights from the First Nations Inclusion Strategy’s four focus areas include welcoming new staff with significant experience in Indigenous and regional engagement, ensuring all projects appear before the First Nations Advisory Team at proposal stage, developing culturally-appropriate resources, and co-designing new education offerings to come.

Finally, in the appendix you’ll see many of the 46 new published resources on mine closure and transition in the public domain. We’ve heard your feedback asking for more accessible information and have implemented new processes by publishing fact sheets, case studies and other bite-sized resources to summarise the longer research reports.

This report signals a shift in maturity for the organisation, and we look forward to the subsequent refreshing of strategies and plans in the year ahead. Thank you for your ongoing support.
