Our early work found there was not easily accessible, broadly available and low cost foundational education on mine closure and transitions.

This is why we funded The University of Queensland and Curtin University to develop a world-first Mass Open Online Course.

Foundations of Mine Closure and Sustainable Transitions’ is now available for users across Australia and globally.

Participants can access a free (40 hours) or asssed (60 hours) version of the course, broadening accessibility and availability.

The course includes seven modules:

  • Post-mining transitions in the lifecycle of a mine and community
  • Regulation, policy and practice
  • Economics, finance and asset closure planning
  • Social aspects of closure
  • Environmental management through asset closure and beyond
  • Recognising Indigenous cultures through closure and post-mining land use
  • Mine closure as a complex system … where next.

Our mining partners – Alcoa, BHP, Hanson, Iluka, MMG, Newmont, Oceana Gold, Rio Tinto, Roy Hill, Energy Australia, Fortescue and South 32 – committed a portion fo their allocated funds to enable this project.
