Natural Capital Accounting Symposium

Hear diverse perspectives and gain cutting-edge insights about pathways to adoption of Natural Capital Accounting in the mining sector.

Four new reports to inform consistent, efficient and effective application of Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) across the sector will be officially launched at the event.

The program includes:

  • an introduction to Natural Capital Accounting
  • lessons from recent case studies
  • insights into ecological restoration in the context of NCA
  • discussion about how NCA can be used as a forecasting tool
  • exploration of how NCA fits with accounting standards.

It is being held on 9.30am – 2.30pm AWST on Wednesday 17 July 2024 at the ANZAC Club in Perth.

Arrival tea and coffee, plus lunch, will be provided.

The NCA suite of reports is made up of:

  • A Business Case: developed around implementing NCA in the Australian mining sector through an analysis of the opportunities that can be realised from its adoption, and the challenges to its implementation. Includes an indicative roadmap for NCA implementation.
  • Guidance Material: designed to build understanding of the concepts, methods and reporting structures for NCA and risk assessment, with a view to practical implementation.
  • Case Study Report: presenting synopses of the pilot case studies that were undertaken to test the applicability of the SEEA_EA framework in the Australian mining sector. These case studies were used to inform the development of the Business Case and Guidance Material.
  • Forecasting Study: testing and demonstrating the potential to use NCA information for strategic forecasting purposes in the mining sector. (This is a new application of NCA that brings more of a strategic opportunity for operational mines to identify potential natural capital impacts, values and opportunities ahead of mining progression to influence better decisions and nature-positive outcomes moving forward).
