Data gathering recently wrapped up following an extensive community deliberation process as part of the current stage of the ‘Collaborative planning for post-mining land use in the Latrobe Valley’ project.
The process involves working with community members to develop aspirations towards a shared vision for future mine land use.
On 20 March, the project team hosted a final (and ‘bonus’ fifth) Community Panel session, with 23 of the original 30 panel members participating in discussions.
Time was spent refining the principles that present and future landowners can use to assess the suitability of future projects as determined as determined by the panel.
Panel members also heard from each of the three mine operators – ENGIE, Energy Australia and AGL – as well as state government agencies Resources Victoria, the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority and Regional Development Victoria about how they intended to use the output of this work.
The following day, the project team joined 10 Indigenous community members and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation staff for a tour of Loy Yang hosted by AGL.
After lunch, the researchers facilitated a yarning around aspirations Mob have for the future of these lands in healing Country and healing Community. The yarn was captured as a graphic storyboard, which will be shared with Community.
This is also the fifth session the team has held with Aboriginal community members of the Latrobe Valley and broader Gunaikurnai lands.
The outcomes of both of these deliberation processes will be prepared in reports alongside outcomes of the Youth Design Summit held in October 2024.
A common theme from each of the deliberations is a real sense of the possibilities these sites present for a more positive future for the Valley for all.
